My veggie juice craze is not yet over. I had the chance last Saturday to try the newest health fad in Manila - the wheatgrass juice. My brother and I were at Trinoma waiting for some relatives for a meet up when we saw a kiosk selling wheat juice. I've been wanting to try this juice for a long time so I did not pass on the chance to have a shot at it.
It's a little expensive at P97.00 in a small styro cup about the size of a shot glass.
Before I tell you how it taste, let me entice you first with the health benefits of drinking wheatgrass juice.
They say that wheatgrass is a complete food because it has proteins, vitamins and minerals. The most important substance in wheatgrass is chlorophyll. Yes, the green pigment in plants needed in photosynthesis as we have learn from our science class. Chlorophyll according to studies has a structure similar to hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the red pigment in red blood cells responsible for delivering oxygen to the different parts of the body. Because of chlorophyll similarity to hemoglogin it has been noted that drinking wheatgrass increase the capacity of blood to deliver more oxygen and nutrients to the body. Drinking a small glass of wheatgrass has more vitamin C than oranges and has twice the amount of vitamin A in carrots. Some of the minerals found in wheatgrass include Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium and Sodium. It has carotene that fights off free radicals that are responsible for a wide variety of diseases. Wheatgrass is packed with amino acids- the building blocks of protein which is responsible for growth and cell regeneration.
As for the taste, it starts of as sweet and then towards the end part you'll detect the grassy taste- bitter. But knowing how healthy a single shot is, I won't hesitate to drink another glass of wheatgrass juice.
